The history of reverse osmosis
Reverse osmosis (a membrane process) has been a well-known principle for decades and was already used by NASA for the Apollo missions in the late 1960s. With the help of reverse osmosis, part of
the drinking water was recovered from the urine of the astronauts. The reverse osmosis process saved up to 60 % drinking water on board the Apollo missions.
Still today, NASA uses reverse osmosis for drinking water treatment for its astronauts during missions of the international space station ISS.

Technology for pure drinking water
The term osmosis describes the process of concentration equalization of two liquids through a selectively permeable membrane. It results in an unequal amount of water on either side of the
membrane. This process occurs in nature and all living beings.
During drinking water treatment, this process of concentration equalization is used in the opposite way to produce pure drinking water. By applying sufficiently high pressure, the flow direction
of water can be influenced to achieve almost complete separation of harmful substances from water. A solution containing foreign substances is pressed onto the membrane, which with its pore size
of 0.3 nano-meters is only permeable for water molecules. A water molecule has a maximum size of 0.28 nano-meters. This explains why reverse osmosis is also known as molecular filtration. Beyond
the membrane, almost completely pure water collects, while the substances dissolved in the water that cannot pass the membrane are retained and flushed out of the system via the drain.
Further development of reverse osmosis
